Mackenzie Heaney signs for York City

By Dan Simmonite | 13th July 2021

York City Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of former Newcastle United player Mackenzie Heaney.

The left-footed attacking midfielder, known as ‘Trialist G’ in the pre-season game against Whitby Town on Sunday played the second half and scored an equaliser with a curling free-kick from 25 yards as the Minstermen went on to win the game 2-1.

Heaney has been training with the club since the beginning of July after leaving Whitby in the summer in his quest to play full-time football.

The talented 22-year-old has been rebuilding his career since his release by Rafa Benitez at Newcastle United in 2018, where he also featured for both England and Scotland at Youth level.

In previous years he has played in the Northern League with Newcastle Benfield and West Auckland before moving abroad, playing for Grindavík in Iceland before signing with Whitby last year.

He links up with former Magpie Steve Watson, who has been impressed with what he has seen and has moved quickly to offer the in-demand midfielder a contract.

The move is subject to FA and National League approval.
