Michael Woods signs contract extension

By Dan Simmonite | 23rd June 2021

York City Football Club is delighted to announce that Michael Woods has today penned a new contract.

The former Chelsea man returned to his hometown club last season and followed in the footsteps of Grandfather Alan Woods, who made 259 appearances for York City between 1960 and 1967 as well as Uncle, Neil, who made eight appearances during the 1998-99 season.

Last season Woods featured regularly in Steve Watson’s side in central midfield and finished the season as the club's second top goal scorer after the 2020/21 campaign finished early.

Woods is joined by Olly Dyson, Paddy McLaughlin, Archie Whitfield and Akil Wright as midfield options and brings the squad total to 15 players ahead of the new season.

Upon signing his new deal, he said: “I’m buzzing to get it done – the rumour mill was swirling but it was never in doubt – the gaffer and Micky have been brilliant with me.

“I was contracted until the end of June so there was never a massive rush to get something sorted but I’m just delighted – this is my club, my hometown club where I was brought up. It will be amazing to pull a shirt on with fingers crossed fans and a crowd and just getting that buzz back from playing on a matchday in front of the locals.

“It was so stop start with the games [last year], we never really got chance to find that consistency or get into a rhythm. It will be nice to get back in pre-season, get a full pre-season under the belt and the main thing really is just having the fans back in the ground.

“Some games it was just not the same without the fans so to have them back in is the biggest part of it for me, especially coming into this new amazing stadium.

“Everyone knows where this club belongs really, I will do everything I can to help get the club back up and that has to be the goal from minute one.”

The first team squad return for pre-season early July.
