Whitfield signs new deal

By Dan Simmonite | 22nd May 2021

We are delighted to retain Archie Whitfield on a new contract for the 2021/22 season.

A versatile defender or midfielder, Whitfield rose to promise after joining City’s Under 16s side following a spell playing with local side Thirsk Falcons and the North Yorkshire FA Schools team.

The 19-year-old has captained the youth team for the past two years under the supervision of Manager Tim Ryan and Head of Youth Development Dan Wilson before he was handed his first pro deal at the start of last season by Steve Watson.

Upon signing, Whitfield said: “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to play here [at the LNER Community Stadium] and get the opportunity to start playing football again.

“I’ve really enjoyed the men’s part of the game so I’m looking forward to playing more at that level.”

Assistant-manager Micky Cummins added: “First of all we liked his attitude, his energy and his desire to learn. As well as being a good lad he came in and trained voluntarily when we had no games.

”There’s some good potential in the younger ones that we’ve signed. We are obviously going to have a younger squad and if they are up to speed and they show progression then we will have no worries in giving them the opportunity.

“For the club it’s fantastic we can promote players from the academy who have been there since the early age groups – it shows that there is a pathway there and we are hopeful they can make a career in the game.”

The club remains in negotiation with Michael Woods over a new contract.
