Five for City in practice match

1st August 2017

YORK City completed their pre-season programme with a 5-1 victory over Bradford City Under-23s this afternoon in a 'behind closed doors' friendly at Bootham Crescent.

Strikers Jon Parkin (2), Amari Morgan-Smith (2), and Louis Almond were all on target for the Minstermen whose next game is the opening National League North fixture against AFC Telford United on Saturday afternoon (kick-off 3pm).

City, pictured warming-up before the game, took the lead after eight minutes when Parkin scored from the penalty spot following a foul on Kaine Felix.

Parkin found the net again in the 31st minute when heading home a freekick taken on the right by Almond.

City made it 3-0 ten minutes before the interval as Almond tucked the ball past the Bradford goalkeeper following a clever pass from Theo Wharton.

Manager Gary Mills made five changes at halftime and switched from a 3-4-3 formation to a 4-3-3.

Substitute Amari Morgan-Smith scored in the 49th minute with a tap-in after Felix chased down a back pass and put the Bradford goalkeeper under pressure.

Bradford reduced the deficit to 4-1 in the 73rd minute before Morgan-Smith completed the scoring with 15 minutes to go - slotting the ball past the goalkeeper following a pass by Adriano Moke.

Defenders Josh Law (groin) and Hamza Bencherif (back) both missed the game due to minor injuries.

Substitute Michael Rankine wore the captain's armband in the second half in the absence of both Sean Newton and Simon Heslop.

York City line-up: Worsnop (Simpson HT); Parslow, Newton (Muggleton HT), Sukar; Smith, Heslop (Moke HT), Wharton, Whittle; Almond (Morgan-Smith HT), Parkin (Rankine HT), Felix.

Goals: Parkin 2, Morgan-Smith 2, Almond.
