Foundation 'Lifting Spirits' in York

29th January 2021

The York City Football Club Foundation are continuing their six years of hard work during the current lockdown.

Their most recent campaign, entitled ‘Lifting Spirits’ is targeted towards older people and those feeling isolated, and aims to help them get through the difficult winter months from November to May.

The older people’s programmes such as walking football and coffee mornings have been running since 2015, and the Foundation have ensured despite the recent lockdowns, that their work will continue to go on. With some members having to shield during this immensely difficult time, the Foundation want to offer support in any way they can.

A recent study from the Office National Statistics (ONS) showed that 2.6 million adults reported that they felt lonely “often” or “always”, and many football clubs stepped forward within the EFL to join the government’s Tackling Loneliness Network over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic.

YCFC Foundation recognised the emerging need in York and created the Lifting Spirits project to address this issue with participants they had already been working with prior to the pandemic and worked extremely hard to be granted funding from the National League Trust and Persimmon Homes, enabling them to focus on delivering five key strands to their participants.

These include support groups, virtual groups on Zoom, doorstep visits, walks and talks as well as a library exchange of items such as books, puzzles and DVDS. The funding allows staff to offer these activities, all in line with government guidelines, to 35 people located around York. The manager of the Foundation, Paula Stainton has said their aim is to ‘keep promoting physical and mental well-being with sessions that follow on from the support we provided last April to October’.

With the pandemic creating feelings of isolation, the participants have directly thanked the Foundation itself, for ‘helping them get through the darkest part of the year again’. Another participant also claimed the sessions ‘never fail to lift the spirits.’

If anyone within the York City family would like to be participate in any of the strands the Foundation are offering, please email or call 01904 559508.

Paula and the team are extremely keen to support whoever they can and continue to help people mentally and physically to make a real impact in the community.
