Minsterbelles knocked out of FA Cup

By Olly Wood | 25th October 2021

City Ladies fell to their first defeat of the season - three goals to nil against Newcastle United who advance into the first round of the Women's FA Cup.

Neither side managed to get control of the game in the opening ten minutes with both sides battling in the middle of the pitch to dictate play.

The first effort on goal came in the 12nd minute, Chloe Precious comfortably took a free kick audaciously hit from distance.

City had their first sighting of goal in the 18th minute, good pressing from Elisha Hardcastle in the Newcastle half led to the midfielder winning the ball, looking up and striking from range but the effort lacked the necessary conviction to trouble the keeper.

20 minutes in the Minsterbelles almost had the game’s opening goal, Jo Symington up from left back looped an effort from distance which had the keeper scrambling but narrowly cleared the bar.

The opening half an hour was very evenly matched, both sides were looking to play out from the back whilst also playing a high pressing game, cancelling each other out.

In the 33rd minute Newcastle tried their luck from a free kick from distance, an almost carbon copy of the earlier one in the half, comfortably taken by Precious again.

A good challenge from Karli Smith deflected a goal bound effort wide, keeping the score level as the visitors tried to carve out a clear-cut chance with less than ten minutes to play before the break.

Five minutes before half time City produced their best chance of the game, Shannon Durkin pulled the ball back for the oncoming Symington who fired at goal only to be denied by the keeper who parried and claimed the ball the second time of asking.

City had toiled away and worked hard in the first half, more and matching their opponents from a division higher, Symington’s effort was the best chance of the half.

The visitors came out on the front foot in the second 45 without really troubling the York backline.

In the 53rd minute Brown played an enticing ball to the back post where Durkin had got in behind the Newcastle defence but the keeper was out well to smother the York attacker’s effort as she slid to meet the pass.

Just after the hour mark the deadlock was broken by Newcastle, a delivery from the left was met with a volley from Georgina Spraggon eight yards out.

City reacted well to going behind, they continued to press and push Newcastle back but couldn’t create any clear openings to force the issue.

Less than ten minutes after taking the lead Newcastle were awarded a penalty for handball, up stepped Rachel Lee who put the visitors two up.

In the 75th minute Rebecca Fevers hit a free kick just wide of the upright as the first goal for City still eluded them.

77 minutes played, Rachel Lee nearly scored her second but her shot came back off the post and City cleared.

Newcastle got their third of the game five minutes before the end, Georgia Gibson got her head on the end of a cross and found the bottom corner putting the tie to bed.

City more than matched Newcastle for an hour, despite falling three down heads didn’t drop but ultimately a clinical Newcastle progress into the next round.

Next up for the Minsterbelles is a return to league action, they host Wallsend B.C. Women on Sunday, kick off at 2pm.
