Minsterbelles put four past Farsley

27th February 2022

A dominant second half display helped the Minsterbelles to all three points, extending the unbeaten run to 14 games.

City got off to the best possible start, taking the lead in the opening five minutes, brilliant play from Rebecca Hunt on the left before drifting in field and playing a stunning ball to the back post for Holly Findlay to fire into the top corner putting York ahead.

Despite taking the lead early on the Minsterbelles couldn’t manage to get control of the game and after 10 minutes the visitors levelled, a fortuitous deflection put Ellie Casper in to equalise.

Just after the quarter of an hour mark Alice Hughes headed narrowly wide from a Rebecca Fevers corner with York looking to re-take the lead swiftly.

Following the early action, the game then calmed, both sides battled it out to get the upper hand but cancelled each other out with York looking to break down a tough defence while Farsley looked to press and catch City on the break.

The next chance in the game fell York’s way in the 38th minute, Fevers crashed a free kick off the face of the bar from range, this was to be a dress rehearsal for the second half.

On the stroke of half time the Minsterbelles regained the lead, Findlay with her second, heading in an inch perfect Fevers corner from close range.

City increased their advantage ten minutes into the second half, it was to be second time lucky for Fevers who fired a free kick in from 20 yards to put York 3-1 up.

In the following five minutes Sophie Tinson saw a half volley bounce wide and Findlay looking for her hattrick curled an effort into the keepers’ hands.

York did get the fourth goal they’d been looking for in the 67th minute and Tinson had her goal, cutting in from the left before brilliantly firing into the bottom corner.

A minute later both Jo Symington and Hunt went close, the first from Symington was well punched away by the keeper who was almost caught out by her lofted effort, the latter just lifted a lobbed strike over the bar from inside the box.

In the 75th minute a Symington corner caused problems in the box, after some pinball the ball deflected goalward, but the goalkeeper claimed well denying York their fifth.

Another important win for the Minsterbelles who remain top of the league and now have to turn their attention to the League Cup next weekend as we welcome Millmoor Juniors Ladies in the first round.
