Minsterbelles put six past Wallsend

By Olly Wood | 2nd November 2021

The Minsterbelles keep up their brilliant league form with another win at home against Wallsend.

It wasn’t all plain sailing for City who couldn’t quite get into their rhythm in the first half, despite their league position, 10th, the visitors pressed and frustrated York all half.

City did start on the front foot however, Sophie Tinson had the first effort of the game from eight yards out but the striker’s shot went over.

Five minutes in Jo Symington who was a constant threat on the left-hand side pushing up from full back stung the keepers hands with a powerful strike.

A couple of minutes later City had an effort well cleared off the line after a goal mouth scramble, a dangerous delivery from Rebecca Fevers made it difficult for the Wallsend defence but nobody in red could put the ball home.

15 minutes in Wallsend had their first foray forward but the effort was well wide of the target nonetheless it was a warning sign for City.

Less than five minutes later the Minsterbelles took the lead, Karli Smith played a brilliant ball in behind for Symington out on the left wing, she delivered an inch perfect cross for Holly Findlay to net her first of the afternoon.

On the half hour mark Findlay almost got her second but her header bounced wide of the far post from an Abby Parkin cross.

In the 32nd minute Chloe Precious who hadn’t had anything to do in the game was called upon to save a well struck Wallsend free kick from range.

With just over five minutes before the break the visitors pulled themselves level, a long ball over the top found the striker who manged to beat Precious to the ball, lobbing an effort in to level the game.

The first ten minutes of the second half, carried on in a similar fashion to the first half, City couldn’t quite click into gear with a lot of the game being battled in the middle of the pitch.

However, on the hour mark York re-took the lead, Findlay again, this time a header from close range converting Fevers delivery into the box.

In the 67th minute Fevers hit the bar from a free kick more than 30 yards out as City looked to put the game to bed.

Three minutes later City did just that, Findlay completed her hattrick with the pick of the bunch, the ball fell loose on the edge of the box and the winger thundered in an effort which crashed in off the bar.

In the 75th minute a well worked move which saw substitute Milly Ash play a one-two with Symington before picking out Tinson who headed in her first of the day.

Tisnon bagged her second of the game two minutes later, the striker found room in the box before shifting the ball onto her right foot curling an effort into the far corner to put York 5-1 up.

There was time for one more York goal, in the 84th minute Fevers found the top corner superbly with a free kick from range to cap off an important win for the Minsterbelles.

The three points make it six unbeaten in the league extending the gap at the top of the table to six points.

Next up for City is an away trip to Farsley Celtic Women next Sunday, kick off at 2pm.
