Minsterbelles win the double

By Olly Wood | 8th May 2022

The Minsterbelles were crowned County Cup champions and League champions this afternoon.

Whilst City battled it out on the pitch to win the County Cup, Ossett and South Shields met in the league with the latter claiming the three points sealing the league title for York, promoting them to Tier Four for the very first time in their history.

All the focus, however, was on the task at hand with silverware on the line and a chance to win the competition that they were beaten finalists in last season; City started brightly against Redcar, passing the ball around and dictating proceedings without managing to break down a strong defence.

In the opening ten minutes, the counter attacking style of Redcar lead to their first attempt on goal, Chloe Precious was on hand to comfortably deal with the well hit shot.

In the 16th minute Redcar again tested Precious who again was equal to the attempt.

Skipper Nikki Brown had York’s first shot of the tie in the 21st minute, unfortunately the midfielder got under it and the shot went over.

Little before the half hour mark, Redcar took the lead, Jess Round managed to find space in the box before picking out the bottom corner to break the deadlock.

City continued to try and open up Redcar despite falling behind, Holly Findlay managed to work a shooting opportunity, but her left footed shot lacked the power to trouble the keeper.

There was little between the two sides in the first half, chances were few and far between as Redcar held the lead with the game heading towards half time.

The final attempt of the half went York’s way two minutes before the break, Elisha Hardcastle took aim from range, but her shot cleared the bar.

With work to do in the second half City came out strongly, a change at the break saw Rebecca Hunt replace Shannon Durkin as York went searching for an equaliser.

They didn’t have to wait long, a minute into the second half they drew level, Jo Symington went on a weaving run before firing a brilliant shot beyond the keeper to give York a deserved equaliser.

Buoyed by the leveller, In the 52nd minute Hunt tested the keeper who managed to claim well.

Just after the hour Hunt was again involved, curling the ball off the upright with City looking to complete the comeback.

In the 65th minute a Jo Symington cross was palmed by the keeper, the loose ball fell for Brown who couldn’t keeper her effort down.

Less than 20 minutes before the end substitute Rebecca Fevers fired a fierce shot narrowly over the bar with the Minsterbelles upping the pressure.

In the 85th it looked like City had won it late on, Brown headed a Fevers corner agonisingly wide of the post as the final chance passed by.

With no extra time, the game went straight to penalties, and the Minsterbelles were first up to take.

Sophie Tinson, Fevers calmly slotted their penalties away as did Hardcastle at the second attempt with the keeper coming off her line forcing a re-take but equally Redcar scored their opening three making the score 3-3 from the first six spot kicks.

Next up was Symington, despite scoring and outstanding goal in the game her penalty was denied by the keeper. Redcar were then given the chance to take the lead but failed to take advantage as their penalty came back off the bar.

Hunt, Abbey Parkin, Alice Hughes, Brown, and Emily Cattle all stepped up and scored, but the score remained level at 8-8 as Redcar answered each City conversion with a successful penalty of their own.

The ninth and final City penalty was dispatched by Milly Ash, with the pressure on Redcar a combination of Precious and the post kept the attempt out and City were crowned County Cup Champions.

Having sealed promotion as champions already with three league games to play in the 2021/22 season City are back in league action starting with the second North Yorkshire derby in as many weeks as the Minsterbelles host Harrogate Town for a 2pm kick off this Sunday where they will be presented with the league trophy.
