Minsterbelles win in Yorkshire derby

By Olly Wood | 1st May 2022

The Minsterbelles bounce back with big win over Harrogate.

Having tasted defeat last weekend for the first time in the league this season City were looking to get back to winning ways away in the North Yorkshire derby.

On the front foot from the off and within the opening ten minutes York had three attempts on the host’s goal.

Rebecca Hunt from a tight angle saw her cross-shot taken by the keeper, then Elisha Hardcastle took aim from range, but the effort was wide and in the tenth minute Alice Hughes lifted a goal bound cross over the bar.

On the quarter of an hour mark York took the lead, Abby Parkin cut in from the right delivering a cross with her left which Sophie Tinson managed to divert beyond the keeper to break the deadlock.

City didn’t lead for long, two minutes later Harrogate drew level, Chloe Precious’ kick out was picked up by Nat Eustance who lobbed the ball in to equalise.

Two minutes later Hunt had the ball in the back of the net but the flag was up preventing York from getting back in front.

In the 25th minute the Minsterbelles hit the bar as they upped the pressure looking to retake the lead, Hughes met a Jo Symington corner but her header came back off the bar before some pinball in the box which Harrogate cleared to Hunt who drew a smart save from the keeper.

From the resulting corner City retook the lead, Holly Findlay unmarked headed in at the back post.

A minute later Findlay got her second, good pressure from the forward presented her with the chance one-on-one with the goalkeeper, she made no mistake with the finish giving York a two-goal lead.

Ten minutes before the break Precious was on hand to prevent the hosts from pulling a goal back producing a one handed save to catch the ball as Harrogate threatened from a corner.

Five minutes into the second half and York had their fourth of the afternoon, the skipper Nikki Brown the scorer, from the right edge of the box firing over the keeper into the far corner.

City weren’t happy with just four, Findlay, in search of her hattrick lifted an effort over from inside the box in the 54th minute.

In the 62nd minute Hunt was brilliantly denied by the outstretched foot of the keeper and two minutes later Parkin had shot well parried away.

Hunt’s last involvement before being replaced by Shannon Durkin was an effort from just inside the box that didn’t come down in time before clearing the bar.

In the 69th minute, having not had much to do all game Precious was down smartly to make an important save from a Harrogate corner.

York added the fifth in the 83rd minute, a second for Tinson whose shot had too much power for the keeper who got a hand to the strike but failed to keep it out.

A derby day win for York who bounce back after defeat at Ossett last Sunday.

Three league games remain but next up for City is the County Cup final against Redcar on Sunday, kick-off 2pm.
