York City U18s fell to their first defeat of the 2026/27 season, away at Morecambe on Saturday morning.
In a solitary Minstermen change from the opening-day draw at Preston, Ethan Stiver replaced Oscar Woolford.
The first chance fell City’s way early on, as the ball was laid off to Sutton Greening on the edge of the area, but the number 10’s low shot through a crowded box was easily stopped by the goalkeeper.
Morecambe soon had an opportunity from a similar position, but the outcome was the same.
York got themselves in front through a well-worked corner in the eighth minute. Greening went short with a one-two before whipping the ball to the back post, where a yellow shirt headed it down for Elvis Hall to lash home.
Greening could have made it two when an awkward bouncing ball left the Shrimps’ defenders in some confusion, but the ‘keeper stood strong.
Later in the half, the hosts sent an effort wide of goal, before City’s defence were required to block a series of dangerous shots.
On the right-hand side, Jack Turner saw a chance well saved by the ‘keeper before, moments later, flashing another effort just across the face of goal.
It was the Minstermen winger who had the first chance of the second half too, agonisingly skewing wide at the back post.
Morecambe levelled in the 54th minute as an unmarked player struck home from around 12 yards out.
Sixteen minutes later, the game was turned on its head as the Shrimps found their second of the day, a direct free-kick flicked past Campbell White to make it 2-1.
In search of the equaliser, City fashioned a few half-chances but nothing that would see the ball cross the line.
A header from a corner flew wide, and Greening’s hopeful volley failed to hit the target.
As the match crept past the 90-minute mark, the home side were reduced to ten men following an off-the-ball altercation between Oscar Woolford and the goalkeeper, which resulted in the latter being dismissed.
An outfield player was forced to take the number one shirt and was soon called into action, diving to palm away Tom Hewson’s close-range flick.
Deep into stoppage time, Morecambe had another sent-off through a second yellow card incident.
They held on in the dying moments to condemn York to their first defeat of the season in the EFL Youth Alliance.
