York City secure Arthur Read as latest summer signing

York City are thrilled to announce the signing of midfielder Arthur Read following the expiry of his contract at Colchester United.

The 26-year-old puts pen to paper with the Minstermen after establishing himself as one of the most consistent midfielders in League Two during his time at the JobServe Community Stadium.

Read began his career in the Luton Town academy at under-9 level, moving through the youth ranks before signing his first professional contract with the Hatters.

He gained his first taste of senior football during the club’s EFL Trophy campaign before enjoying a loan spell with Hemel Hempstead Town.

In 2019, the midfielder made the switch to Brentford, joining their highly-regarded B team set-up.

He made 30 appearances and scored five goals in his first season with them, but spent the whole of the 2020/21 campaign on loan at Stevenage, which was a successful stint.

That earned him a permanent move to the club the next summer, where he featured as the Boro secured promotion to League One, although Read departed in January 2023 on the search for regular minutes.

He joined Colchester United and quickly became a key asset in midfield.

In his first full season there, he played 46 times, scored five goals, and picked up the club’s Official Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards.

Read has remained influential across the last two campaigns, surpassing 150 appearances for the U’s in all competitions, and now heads to North Yorkshire to strengthen the midfield as the Minstermen prepare for their Football League return.

Welcome to York, Arthur!
