The U19’s had to settle for a point on Wednesday afternoon after they were held to a 1-1 home draw to Notts County.
Billy Gordon handed the Young Minstermen the lead inside the opening half-an-hour, but a second half equaliser for the visitors ensured they travelled back to Nottinghamshire with a point.
It was the first of three games against County that the Minstermen would face in the space of three weeks, having also drawn them away in the semi-final of the National League Academy Cup.
U19’s manager Tim Ryan named three changes from the side that beat Chester in the cup quarter-final last time out, as Jonny Haase, Harley Dawson and Harry Burland returned into the starting eleven.
The visitors wasted a chance inside the opening two minutes with a header going wide of the post from a corner, but soon after the first-half became one-way traffic for the home side as they dominated play in the opening forty-five minutes.
Max Ezard had a low effort from the edge of the area deflect away for a corner in the 10th minute, before the resulting corner saw Kieran Clayton head wide at the far post.
Alex Hernandez then went close to opening the scoring moments later, but his effort from close-range hit the outside of the post, before Ezard had another chance but his effort flew over the bar from inside the penalty area.
Gordon finally broke the deadlock for City, with the midfielder getting onto the end of Hernandez’s through-ball, before firing a fierce effort into the bottom-right corner from the edge of the area.
Jacob McLoughlin fired an effort narrowly wide of the post after connecting with a delivery into the area from Williams Edenene just after the half-hour mark, before goalkeeper Jacob Bulmer produced a stunning save to tip over a curling effort from the edge of the area, keeping Notts County scoreless in the first-half.
The visitors equalised though in the 52nd minute with an effort from close-range beating Bulmer, after the goalkeeper could only parry away a dangerous cross into the area from the right.
After coming off the bench in the second-half, Jonny Shepherd rounded the keeper and had an effort cleared off the line by a Notts County, before Harley Dawson had an effort inside the area well saved by the ‘keeper.
The U19’s were unable to find a winner, as they were made to claim only a point at the training ground, which moves them up to 10th in the league table with several games still in hand on other teams around them.
Next Wednesday sees the U19’s travel across to West Yorkshire to take on FC Halifax Town at Old Earth.
