York City U19s are back at St George’s Park this Wednesday for the second time in as many years, as they look to defend the National League Football Academy Cup against Maidstone United U19s (5.30pm kick-off).
There is no better way to bounce back from last week’s league defeat at Farsley Celtic than in a cup final at such an iconic venue.
Following the 2022/23 success over Woking when a solitary Kieran Clayton goal clinched the trophy, Tim Ryan’s side now has the chance to go back-to-back, a feat that no team have achieved before in the competition.
Despite conceding the least amount of goals in the National League U19 Alliance this campaign, the Minstermen can finish no higher than 4th with one game to spare, so all attention is on Wednesday evening, where City can end the season in style.
Road to the Final
The Young Minstermen kicked off their NLFA Cup campaign against Chesterfield back in January, picking up a 1-0 victory thanks to a close-range header from Harley Dawson.
At the quarter-final stage, City played host to Guiseley, and after neither side could be split after ninety minutes at 1-1. A penalty shootout had to decide the tie, which the Young Minstermen edged 4-2.
A tough semi-final test away at Blyth Spartans represented the next hurdle for City, and once again, they were victorious – goals from Bill Marshall and Leon Gibson-Booth fired us into the final.
