The Minstermen settled for a point away at Southend United on Wednesday night, remaining unbeaten in the Enterprise National League after three games.

Adam Hinshelwood made one change to his City side, with Joe Grey swapping in for Alex Newby.

Southend had the first chance of the game. Charley Kendall with a backheeled effort at goal, but it wasn’t enough to test Harrison Male.

City’s first chance came from a set-piece. Alex Hunt’s looped ball into the box met the head of Ollie Banks, who headed wide of the post.

The hosts hit back with a chance of their own. Gus Scott-Morriss with a glorious chance from inside the box but he rolled his shot inches wide of the post.

The game had a lively end-to-end start. Ollie Banks stepped up to take a City free-kick in a shooting position but his effort struck the crossbar.

Joe Felix was next to try his luck. His shot from outside the box taking a heavy deflection which took the ball over the bar.

York had the first effort of the second half when the ball fell kindly to Alex Hunt inside the Southend box who struck the ball on the half-volley but it was well blocked by the hosts.

Southend had a chance of their own just moments later when Kendall hit a shot from range but Male made a good stop down low to his left.

Tyrese Sinclair was on hand to test keeper Collin Andeng-Ndi when he hit a venomous effort whilst being fouled to win City a free-kick. Hunt took the resulting kick but his shot fell over the bar.

Sam Austin came very close to opening the score with five to play. His header from a Scott-Morriss cross struck the same crossbar Banks found in the first half.

Substitute Josh Stones had a header of his own saved just moments later from inside the Southend box.

Hinshelwood switched it up in the final stages, sending Ben Brookes on for his debut in place of Alex Hunt, but there were to be no more chances, and the points would be shared in Essex.
