U19s Match Report: York City U19s 0-2 Guiseley U19s

York City U19s fell to a 2-0 defeat in their return to league action against Guiseley at the training ground on Wednesday.

Tim Ryan made five changes to the side that recorded an impressive 5-2 victory over Boro Rangers in the FA Youth Cup six days earlier.

Ben Farrar, Oz Shaw, Jake Roberts, Lewis Beadle and Sutton Greening made way, with Tom Hewson, Lincon Newall, Josh Binns, and Eddie Kettlewell all coming into the starting eleven.

Guiseley began proceedings at Wigginton Road, but it was City who carved out the first chance inside two minutes.

Michael Kydd danced past a couple of Guiseley players before slotting the ball through to Donny Day in the box, whose low effort was seemingly tipped wide by the ‘keeper.

Just moments later, Eddie Kettlewell went on a solo run from halfway, driving forward towards the ‘D’ from where he slipped a tame effort wide of goal.

Day had another chance soon after. A corner in towards Kettlewell was flicked his way, but he couldn’t get the right connection to prevent the ball from rising over the crossbar.

Cam White was called into action for the first time next, safely catching a speculative effort from distance.

However, he was slightly unlucky with the opener, which arrived in the 23rd minute.

A clever turn from the Lions’ number seven allowed him to escape Josh Binns and power into the area, before finding the far bottom corner to make it 1-0.

A relatively quiet spell followed, before the visiting side extended their advantage.

A long free kick from deep bounced over a sea of bodies in the box and fell kindly for a man in white at the back post, who slammed the ball into the back of the net for two.

Kettlewell continued to be a bright spark after the restart, testing the ‘keeper again from distance, before we introduced Ed Campbell, Oz Shaw, and Jake Roberts in a triple substitution before the hour mark.

But it was nearly a third shortly after, White soon called into action once more, pushing behind a powerful effort as Guiseley threatened a third. The visitors then went close from a free kick, curling so narrowly wide of the top corner.

Down the other end came another shot off target on the turn from Kettlewell, who had been involved in almost all of York’s chances on the afternoon of his first start of the season.

Theo Clarke made his return off the bench and had the best opportunity of the game for City deep into added time.

A corner dropped to him on the penalty spot, and his fierce strike crashed against the crossbar, the final kick of the match.

The young Minstermen are back at it against Stockport Town in the FA Youth Cup next Thursday, as they look to advance into the Second Round (7pm kick-off at Mill Lane).
