York City’s 24-game unbeaten run came to an end on Tuesday night, as we fell to a 3-2 defeat at Boreham Wood.
It took just six minutes for York City to get the opener. Zak Johnson’s cross from the right floated all the way to the back-post, and there was Ollie Pearce to volley home into the bottom corner.
City were holding their dominance early on. Jeff King with a ball to Alex Hunt to shoot from the edge of the box but Ted Curd got down low to make the stop.
Boreham Wood’s first chance came after 15 minutes. Marley Marshall-Miranda with a tame shot from inside the box which was easily saved by Harrison Male.
Josh Stones had a chance not long after when the ball dropped to him inside the box. His shot on the turn was well blocked in the end.
The hosts were still very much in the contest as former City man Lewis Richardson went for a left-footed effort which was well blocked by Zak Johnson.
Harrison Male was called into action in the 28th minute when Matt Rush found space to shoot. His shot heading straight for the arms of the City no.1 who beat the ball away.
The hosts nearly had their equaliser when Abul Abdulmalik’s ball in from the left took a hefty deflection which dragged it onto the crossbar before Ben Brookes cleared away.
Rush tried his luck once more 8 minutes before half time when his effort went bouncing goalwards only to be denied by the diving Male once more.
Boreham Wood drew level in the opening few minutes of the second half. A corner from Zak Brunt reaching the head of Lewis Richardson who nodded the ball post Male and into the net.
City were looking to build momentum and respond when Pearce floated in a cross to the back post looking for the head of Josh Stones. The header from Stones wasn’t able to test Curd as the keeper collected.
York were handed an uphill task with 28 minutes to go when Josh Stones was handed a second yellow card for an off the ball foul.
Boreham Wood got their second goal with 12 minutes remaining. The ball falling kindly to Cameron Coxe who finished the ball past Male from inside the box.
Charlie O’Connell headed home in the 87th minute to add a buffer to the Wood Army’s lead, making it 3-1.
There was some hope restored for City in the second minute of the five added on at the end, with Ollie Banks converting from a corner, but it ended up being too little, too late.
Malachi Fagan-Walcott headed narrowly wide in the dying minutes, and it would be Boreham Wood who took all the points.
