Stuart Maynard and Josh Stones have been nominated for the Enterprise National League’s monthly awards for February.
Maynard has already collected two Manager of the Month awards this season, for November and January, and will now be hoping to make it back-to-back.
City began the month with a 2-1 victory over Forest Green Rovers, with Alex Hunt and Ollie Pearce finding the net.
Four days later, we hosted Hartlepool United in a thrilling encounter. Alex Newby gave the Minstermen the lead before the visitors equalised. Hiram Boateng restored our advantage with a header in the 84th minute, but Hartlepool levelled again deep into stoppage time.
There was to be one final twist. City were awarded a penalty in the 103rd minute, and up stepped Josh Stones, who kept his composure to convert and seal a big win at the LNER Community Stadium.
Next came a trip to Wealdstone, where second-half goals from Morgan Williams, Zak Johnson, and Dan Batty secured an emphatic 3-0 victory.
A Yorkshire derby on home soil followed, and City raced into a 3-0 lead by half-time against FC Halifax Town. Stones opened the scoring in the 18th minute, latching onto a pinpoint cross from Ollie Banks and finishing clinically. Hunt, Pearce, and Banks added further goals to cap a dominant display.
The following Tuesday’s trip to Scunthorpe United is one that will live long in the memory of City supporters. Stones opened the scoring, sliding the ball past the goalkeeper, before playing his part in the second by holding up possession and laying it off for the cross that Joe Grey headed home.
Stones then grabbed his second with a sensational solo goal. Collecting the ball just inside the opposition half, he fought off a defender, rounded the goalkeeper, and squeezed it home from a difficult angle.
His impact continued days later at Morecambe, where it was Stones’ cross that set up the winner in the 99th minute. Banks volleyed home to spark delirium in the away end and cap a perfect month for the Minstermen, who finished February with a 100% win record.
