York City are excited to announce the signing of attacking midfielder Greg Olley.
The 29-year-old arrives in North Yorkshire after departing Gateshead at the end of the 2024/25 season.
Olley’s footballing journey started in Newcastle United’s youth system, where he remained until 2015.
Following his release from the North East club, he headed to Yorkshire to join Hull City, and made his first-team debut in an EFL Cup victory over Exeter City.
His time with the Tigers lasted three years, before a new adventure began not too far from home, at Gateshead.
Initially joining on a one-year contract, Olley would go on to spend seven seasons at the Gateshead International Stadium.
He played 41 times in his first there, a campaign which saw the Heed demoted to the National League North.
Over the next three seasons, during which the midfielder was named captain, he featured heavily, and eventually led his side back to the fifth tier, in the same year York City gained promotion too.
At the end of 2021/22, Olley came away with a superb 28 assists to his name across all competitions, earning him an unsurprising inclusion in the division’s Team of the Season.
Fast forward twelve months, and he would be walking out at Wembley Stadium wearing that captain’s armband in the Isuzu FA Trophy Final, which unfortunately ended in defeat to FC Halifax Town.
However, the next season, Gateshead reached back-to-back finals, and on this occasion, emerged victorious on penalties against Solihull to lift silverware under the arch.
The 29-year-old was looking for a bright start to 2024/25, but sustained a serious injury on matchday two that restricted his appearances for the rest of the term, after netting a hat-trick on opening day.
The next game Olley will play now will be in City colours, and we can’t wait to welcome him to the LNER Community Stadium.
Welcome to York, Greg!
Subject to league and FA approval.
