Match Preview | Southend United

The Minstermen return to the LNER Community Stadium this weekend when we take on bottom-of-the-league Southend United.

Neal Ardley will be hoping his side can build on last weekend’s 2-2 draw at home against Boreham Wood at home as we go in search for our first win of the season.

Despite currently sitting bottom of the Vanarama National League table after a ten point deduction, Southend head into this weekend’s encounter in fine form having taken a possible thirteen points from twenty-four in their opening eight league games.

Kevin Maher’s side are currently unbeaten in their last two league games, having beaten Kidderminster Harriers (2-1) and drawn away at FC Halifax Town (1-1) last weekend

We are pleased to announce that this weekend’s fixture is a Designated Foundation Fixture, with many activities taking place around the ground building up to kick-off.

York City vs Southend United will be played on Saturday 16th September, kicking off at 3pm. Here is all the information you need to know ahead of this weekend’s fixture.

Y22 Bus Service

The Y22 Shuttle Bus service, kindly organised by York City Supporters Trust and First York, will be running for this fixture.

The Y22 service runs from two hours before kick-off and after the game until the ground is clear, up to 90 minutes after the full-time whistle. This increases the frequency of buses running between Stonebow in the City Centre and the Monks Cross Park & Ride stop, as well as freeing up capacity on the existing number 9 route.

Fans wishing to use the service will need to purchase the Y22 tickets from the First Bus app, which are priced at:

  • Adult return: £3.50
  • Child/Concessionary return: £2
  • Adult single: £2
  • Child/Concessionary single: £1

No other tickets will be valid on the service.

Previous Meetings

The two club’s have a rich history of meetings, which dates back to the Football League days.

Last season, both York and Southend went head-to-head on three separate occasions. Kevin Maher’s side got the better of the Minstermen last season, securing two 2-0 victories over City which came at the LNER Community Stadium and Roots Hall in the National League.

However, City got the better of Southend in our most recent meeting, which came as an FA Trophy 5th Round win in February earlier this year, where goals from Fraser Kerr and Lennell John-Lewis saw the Minstermen advance into the Quarter-Finals of the competition.

How to follow the game

As always, the best way to follow the game is in the ground. If you can’t make it to the LNER Community Stadium however, here are some alternatives:
