York City completed the double over Carlisle United with a dominant 3-0 performance at Brunton Park on Wednesday night.
The first chance in this top-of-the-table clash ended with a goal for the Minstermen. Mark Kitching fed the ball forward to Ben Brookes down the left, who made an advancing run before placing the ball to Josh Stones inside the box, who steered the ball home.
Carlisle came close to an equaliser shortly after when the ball fell kindly to Georgie Kelly on a one-on-one. Harrison Male stood big to make a great stop to deny the hosts.
The opening 30 minutes was short of chances for both sides. The next chance fell to Kelly from a cross but his header bounced wide of the mark.
Carlisle had the first chance of the second half when Cameron Harper hit a shot from range. He could only watch as it flew high over the bar.
Stones latched onto a long ball forward before attempting to take the ball round Gabe Breeze in the Carlisle net. The ball just evaded the City striker before rolling out for a goal-kick.
City still held a narrow lead in the 68th minute and had a chance to shoot from a free-kick. Ben Brookes went alone but his shot flew just wide and into the side netting.
York were handed a penalty in the 75th minute from a blatant hand ball in the box from a Carlisle player. Alex Hunt stepped up the slot the ball away to double City’s lead in a crucial match.
Jeff King was next to try his luck when he shot from range, Breeze was able to tip this one over.
Alex Newby had the ball in the net shortly after, only to be denied by the linesman’s flag.
But Newby did get his goal in the 98th minute to seal it, following in after an initial strike was tipped onto the bar.
