Match Report | Chesterfield 4-0 York City

The Minstermen lost 4-0 away at Chesterfield in the Vanarama National League on Tuesday night.

Neal Ardley made one change to the side which made the long trip south to Eastleigh on Saturday, with Adam Crookes dropping out for midfielder Olly Dyson.

City won their first corner inside two minutes after Kai Kennedy’s looping cross was tipped over by experience goalkeeper Ryan Boot, however the resulting free-kick was met by a Chesterfield defender and cleared away.

The Minstermen accrued their third corner inside 12 minutes when Lenell John-Lewis met a right-sided cross inside area to volley his shot at defender Tyrone Williams.

Rory Watson made a good save in the 23rd minute to keep proceedings level after Will Grigg broke the offside trap chasing a ball down wide, Grigg went inwards to Armando Dobra who struck it at goal from a tight angle.

Grigg looked to replicate his trap break in the 26th minute, swivelling and taking control of the ball inside the area, but the linesman’s flag denied the forward his chance.

City’s defence remained stubborn as the first half went on, with Chesterfield resulting to pop shots, including Mike Jones’ 33rd minute effort which flew over the bar.

Michael Jacobs was next in line to take aim from distance after the ball landed to him from the corner, however the low effort was comfortably collected again by Watson.

Chesterfield took the lead in the 49th minute, just after the turn of the half. Grigg struck the crossbar initially with a header from point blank range before the ball ended up back out wide on the right-hand flank, where a low-hit Ollie Banks driving shot flung across Watson and nestled into the far side of the goal.

Tom Naylor doubled the host’s lead in the 61st minute, landing on a falling clearance following the cross by Branden Horton, before connecting sweetly and dispatching his volley first time low into the net.

Grigg eventually got onto the scoresheet in the 72nd minute, latching onto a loose ball inside the area to side foot past Watson and give the Spireites a comfortable lead.

A fourth was added in the 83rd minute when Grigg picked the pocket of Watson before rolling in on an incredibly acute angle.

The Minstermen are next in action on Saturday evening when we host FC Halifax Town, live on TNT Sports.
