The Minstermen suffered a shock defeat to the hands of Clitheroe in the Isuzu FA Trophy this afternoon.
The first chance of the game fell to City. An Alex Hunt corner floated into the centre of the box was well headed clear.
The hosts’ first clear chance came on the 13th minute. Harry Scarborough found room in the box to head at goal, only to place his effort wide of the mark.
Ben Brookes was looking to cause problems for Clitheroe from the left when his left-footed ball into the box just bobbled in front of the baring Josh Stones, who couldn’t wrap the ball goalwards.
The final chance of the first half came when Joe Grey looked to slip Alex Hunt through on goal. His effort from close range was well saved by Hazin Hadi.
The hosts had an early chance in the second half when Carroll took on a shot from inside the box. George Sykes-Kenworthy was equal to the effort.
Alex Hunt was looking for a trademark long-range goal from a free-kick. This one flew inches wide of the right-hand post.
Minutes later, City caught Clitheroe on the break; the final ball to Craig Hewitt was a good one, but he fired his shot over from just outside the box.
In the 85th minute, substitute Alex Newby had the hosts turning as his ball into the box was met by Ollie Pearce. The striker placed his header straight at the keeper.
On the stroke of added time, Clitheroe sent the ground into pandemonium when Creech placed a wonderful shot into the bottom right-hand corner to give the hosts the lead.
The cheers were to be short-lived as in the last kick of the game, Ollie Pearce pounced onto the ball to fire it into the bottom corner to take the game to penalties.
Hunt had a chance to win it at the last, but his shot went just wide of the post.
York were to suffer penalty heartbreak as Newby saw his penalty saved before Joe Grey’s deciding penalty went over the bar to send Clitheroe through to the next round.
