Match Report | Gateshead 3-1 York City

York City suffered defeat to the hands of Gateshead in the North East following a 3-1 loss.

Joe Grey’s ecstatic run got the game started when his movement gave him room to shoot on his left foot from just inside the box. The effort went just wide of the target.

Hiram Boateng collected the ball in the midfield before slipping the ball through to Ollie Pearce, who shot on the bounce but could only watch as his effort went over the bar.

Jacob Butterfield had the hosts’ first shot in the 18th minute. His shot from the edge of the box was kindly deflected into the arms of Harrison Male.

Gateshead were close to opening the scoring 10 minutes later when Butterfield played an excellent ball across to box towards Levi Amantchi who had room to shoot but the Heed man missed the ball before City cleared away.

York responded with another chance. Alex Hunt with a low cross into the box looking for Pearce who took a swipe at goal but his shot bounced wide of the left-hand post.

The hosts took the lead just before the break. A long through into the box wasn’t cleared by Alex Newby before the ball fell kindly to Keaton Ward at the back post who smashed the ball past Male.

The Minstermen nearly levelled the game moments later. Joe Grey’s cross reaching a towering header from Josh Stones but the ball went just over the crossbar.

York started the second half brightly. Alex Hunt with a shot from just inside the box which was kept out by the diving Adam Desbois. The resulting counterattack was stopped superbly by the tackling Zak Johnson.

Morgan Williams found himself with room to shoot from inside the box. He slipped the ball past Desbois but a last ditch clearence from Fenton John denied City.

Fagan-Walcott played in a teasing cross to the head of Zak Johnson inside the box but his header bounced wide of the right-hand post.

Gateshead doubled their lead in the 60th minute. Josh Anifowose with a ball across the face of goal into Ash Boatswain who slotted the ball home from close range.

The hosts wrapped up the points 4 minutes from time. A free-kick swung is was met by the head of Louis Storey who powered a header past Male to seal the win.

York got a consolation goal in added time when Ollie Pearce slotted the ball home from inside the box.

Ollie Banks put Desbois to the test late on but it wasn’t enough to spark a late comeback.
