Match Report | Maidenhead United 1-3 York City

City won in dramatic fashion once again as two late goals ensured the three points would be heading back to North Yorkshire.

The first chance of the game fell to the Minstermen when Jeff King played in a teasing cross looking for the head of Josh Stones, but the hosts managed to see the ball behind for a goal-kick.

Maidenhead was eager to throw the ball forward from a set-piece and came close when Shawn McCoulsky got on the end of a free-kick to shoot at goal from close range but Rory Watson made a great stop to deny him.

The hosts were pressing again from a set-piece. This time a corner swung in looking for his man in the middle was headed behind by Callum Howe for another corner.

King was left with space down the right-hand side again before he played in another cross into the middle, this time to the head of Ollie Pearce who headed at goal, but it went wide of the mark.

In the 36th minute Maidenhead came the closest to date when a cross in towards the back post was met by Reece Smith who looped the ball at goal, but it went inches over the bar.

Almost immediately after King was looking to cause problems for the hosts again. His shot from range was parried down low by Craig Ross.

City took the lead on the stroke of half time. A King corner was deflected on by Ollie Pearce and past Ross at the front post and into the net.

Maidenhead came out the second half fighting and were handed an indirect free kick when Watson handled the ball from a York kick. Tristan Abrahams was teed up from the kick, but he saw his venomous effort well blocked by the York defence.

The early second half pressure from the hosts paid off in the 63rd minute when the ball was fed in towards the city box before it fell kindly to Abrahams who fired a shot into the bottom left-hand corner.

York was looking for an instant response but Pearce’s shot from range couldn’t test Ross as it went over the crossbar.

A great chance fell the Minstermen’s way in the 70th minute when some neat play from Pearce allowed Stones with room to shoot but his left-footed effort from inside the box went wide of the mark.

Craig Ross was called into action shortly after when he dived to his right to make a smart stop to deny Tyrese Sinclair from inside the box.

The hosts came inches away from a famous second when a second ball inside the city box fell to McCoulsky who’s shot rolled just wide of the right-hand post.

A near chance fell to City right away when Pearce flashed the ball across the face of goal but nobody in a red shirt was on hand to steer the ball goalwards.

In the dying second a through ball was fed towards Ollie Pearce who looked up before placing a shot into the bottom left-hand corner to give York the lead.

The drama was to be continued when another ball forward was latched onto by Josh Stones who doubled the lead in added time to ensure the three points were coming back to Yorkshire.
