York City overcame Morecambe on Saturday evening in the Enterprise National League, with Ollie Banks hitting a dramatic late winner to secure all three points.

Morecambe saw an early chance fall their way when a cross in from the left went in search of Paul Lewis. City were able to get to the second ball to clear away.

The hosts played in another cross minutes later when Lewis Payne’s ball in from the right was met by Liam Hogan in the box but his header went wide.

Miguel Azeez was next to try his luck for the hosts but his shot from the edge of the box was met by the rising Morgan Williams who headed the ball away.

York’s first shot of note came in the 23rd minute when Ollie Banks let fly from outside the box. His shot taking a deflection to take it over.

Jack Nolan went inches away from giving Morecambe the lead after half and hour. His left-footed shot from the edge of the box striking the post before the rebound from Chris Popov was put over the bar.

City nearly took the lead themselves shortly after. Williams with a ball through to Ollie Pearce who went to lob Jamal Blackman in the Morecambe goal but the keeper made a great one handed save to deny him.

Jeff King had the first chance of the second half but his shot on his left-foot was easily held by Jamal Blackman.

York so nearly had the breakthrough straight after when Alex Newby’s cross from the left was headed at goal by Stones, looping goalwards his effort was cleared off the line.

In a crazy two minutes which saw Morecambe reduced to 10 men with Paul Lewis sent off for a foul on Josh Stones in the box. Alex Hunt stepped up but his penalty was saved by Blackman down to his right.

Hiram Boateng took a shot at goal from inside the box straight after which was once again saved on the line by the foot of a Morecambe defender.

York were knocking on the door in what felt an inevitable goal opener coming their way. It didn’t land in the 65th minute when a cross from Ollie Banks was headed just over from inside the box by Stones.

Another cross in from the left by Mark Kitching was met in the middle by Stones who headed goalwards once more but again the heroics of Jamal Blackman denied the Minstermen.

In added time City were creating more chances. A great ball in from Banks towards the back-post was floated wide by Stones who took the header on.

Then, in the ninth minute of the ten added on, a cross in from Stones on the right found Banks in the box, who volleyed a precise strike into the back of the net to send the York fans into delirium.

The dramatic late winner sealed all three points for the Minstermen, who remain top of the table and travel to Boreham Wood on Tuesday night.
