Another chance came York’s way in the 10th minute when a shot on the edge of the box from Ben Brookes flew over the bar.
In the 26th minute, Newby was looking lively again when he pulled the ball back to Ollie Banks, who struck a venomous shot at goal, but the shot went wide of the mark.
Tyrese Sinclair was looking to try his luck from range with two shots, both bouncing wide of the left-hand post.
Newby had the first chance of the second half, but his shot from outside the box was deflected wide of the post.
It was the City trialist who got the game’s opening goal in the 55th minute when he drilled a shot from outside the box into the bottom left-hand corner.
Sub Mo Fadera was looking to grab his second goal in pre-season when he curled a shot wide of the mark from the edge of the box.
