The Minsterbelles end the year with defeat at Stockport Sports Village.
Two set-pieces were ultimately City’s undoing as they fell to a 3-0 defeat seeing the hosts climb to fourth in the table.
It wasn’t until the 13th minute before either side registered the first shot of the afternoon. Jess Holder managed to work room to strike but her effort was off target.
Less than five minutes later at the other end Stockport had their first shot of the match. Becky Sidwell was down smartly to deny Kenzie Bentley.
Sidwell again came to York’s rescue in the 20th minute, Maria Figueiredo tried her luck from range with a dipping volley which Sidwell brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar and over.
From the resulting corner the hosts took the lead, the delivery managed to bounce all the way through to the back post where Chloe Howard arrived and fired in.
After 33 minutes Sidwell again had to tip over a Stockport effort with the hosts pushing to double their advantage.
Chances were few and far between and neither side managed to get into any rhythm. In the 40th minute Faye Bowness was forced off after a lengthy stoppage following an injury, without a sub goalkeeper on the bench the goal scorer Howard went in goal.
Within the first minute of the restart the hosts doubled their advantage, another set piece turned out to be City’s undoing as the York defence failed to clear and Em Bradshaw finished from close range.
Responding well to going two down, Jess Heald fired wide after driving forward before Holder took aim but her shot deflected behind for a corner.
In the 54th minute York won a free kick 30 yards out, Alice Hughes stood over the ball and struck a powerful effort on target, Howard the stand in keeper tipped over the bar.
A minute later Holder shot on target but Howard gathered at the second attempt.
As City pushed to get back in the game Stockport caught them on the break, in the 67th minute Bentley beat the offside trap and finished beyond the onrushing Sidwell to seal the points.
York then came agonisingly close to reducing the deficit, Heald hit a thunderous shot off the crossbar, the ball cannoned down and somehow not over the line before the hosts cleared.
A fifth straight defeat for the Minsterbelles who return to action in the new year with a trip to Bradford City on Sunday 8th January, kick off 2pm.
