Match Report | York City 0-0 Eastleigh FC

York City drew 0-0 against Eastleigh at the LNER Community Stadium in the Vanarama National League on Saturday afternoon.

The result saw York extended their unbeaten run to seven games.

Adam Hinshelwood made one change to the side which beat Solihull Moors 3-0 mid-week, with Tyrese Sinclair starting in place of the injured Ashley Nathaniel-George.

There was very little to separate the two sides in the opening 45 minutes.

It was the winger himself who got The Minstermen’s first shot on target, sharing a one-two with Cameron John before curling an easily read effort at Joe McDonnell.

John then lashed over an 18th minute effort from inside the area.

Chris Maguire called Harrison Male into action in the 26th minute after a low drilled effort looked to catch out our shot-stopper.

Last season’s top goalscorer Paul McCallum closed out the half with two fine chances which went begging for the Spitfires.

McCallum firstly met a cross along the floor at the back post, stabbing wide before steering a Tyres Shade cross away from target too.

Dipo Akinyemi opened the second half with an ambitious, left-footed curling effort after an opening allowed the attacker to strike at goal.

A left-footed volley from our number nine was thumped wide in the 51st minute too.

Ryan Fallowfield’s 67th minute cross fall kindly to the rushing John, who saw his powerful shot blocked away before reaching goal.

City applied further pressure around Eastleigh’s box though as Ollie Pearce next struck at goal.

The forward arguably should have put Adam Hinshelwood’s side ahead in the 74th minute.

Akinyemi’s progressive, direct running from the right flank concluded in Pearce being setup from a handful of yards out, but the forward scuffed wide from close range.

Jake Vokins curled well over the bar from close range minutes later for Eastleigh.

Substitute Callum Harriott had a shot blocked on the floor by an Eastleigh defender in the 80th minute before Akinyemi bent a shot which deflected to win York a corner.

The Spitfires continued to block out The Minstermen as Dan Batty 81st minute corner, which was headed back into the mix by Callum Howe, resulted in a blocked shot for Lenell John-Lewis.

An off the bench goal from John-Lewis has become routine for the forward so far this season, and it so nearly happened again as the forward steered a header just wide in the 90+6th minute following a cross from the left flank.
