Match Report | York City 7-2 Aldershot Town

York City hit Aldershot for seven in one of the games of the season at the LNER Community Stadium.

City played the ball long straight away and won an early corner. Alex Hunt took the set-piece but Tylor Frost headed clear.

It took just three minutes for the Minstermen to break the deadlock! Hunt’s second corner of the game being headed on by captain Callum Howe and into the path of Ollie Pearce who buried his header past Marcus Dewhurst.

In what proved to be on of the liveliest starts to a game you could ever wish for it was 2-0 after just 9 minutes. Lewis Richardson collecting the ball on the edge of the box before spinning the defender and slotting the ball home.

Aldershot were awarded a penalty just a minute later. Josh Barret stepped up in the hope of bringing his side level but Harrison Male made an excellent stop down to his right-hand side before making the double save on the rebound.

Marvin Armstrong nearly made it three just moments later, his shot from close range was well kept out by the Aldershot back line.

City made it three after just 19 minutes. Hunt’s ball was received by Richardson who placed the ball onto his left-foot before rolling the ball past Dewhurst into the bottom right corner.

Aldershot had a mountain to climb but were not going to go away as easily as first thought. Jack Barham shooting the ball past Male to give the shots a gimmer of hope.

Sinclair was again testing the Shots keeper, his venomous effort from the edge of the box was parried away on his line.

Hunt was looking to cause more problems for the Shots. His corner to the edge of the box was hit by Tyrese Sinclair but his shot at goal was well blocked and cleared away.

Aldershot were awarded a second penalty with minutes to go in the first half. Theo Widdrington stepped up this time but the outcome was the same result, Male with the save. However his save was parried into the path of Kwame Thomas who shot the rebound into the net to bring the Shots right back into the game.

York however just like before charged the ball forward again. A long ball towards Pearce who latched onto the ball before placing an effort past Dewhurst once more.

Aldershot had the first chance of the second half, Barret’s corner being headed towards goal by Will Armitage but Hunt was there to cut out the ball.

Aldershot were reduced to ten men. Cameron Hargreaves was shown a straight red for a challenge on Joe Felix.

City made four changes on the hour make. Junior Luamba sprung into life straight away when he went charging down on goal but his effort was well kept out by Dewhurst.

Super sub Josh Stones was involved in the action when he went on a charge into the box before cutting the ball onto his left-foot and placing the ball into the bottom corner.

Callum Howe with a fantastic goal shortly followed when he made an advancing run forward, playing a one-two to his left before planting a shot at goal from the edge of the box and finding the net.

Ollie Pearce rounded off a 5 star afternoon with his third goal, ensuring he would be taking the match-ball home as well as bringing the curtain down on one of the most remarkable games of the season.
