McGurk, Law and Dunn inducted as new YCFC club ambassadors

We are very pleased to say that David McGurk, Graeme Law, and Iain Dunn have all been inducted as brand new YCFC club ambassadors ahead of the 2025/26 season.

McGurk started at Darlington before enjoying a loan spell at York, before signing permanently and making over 300 appearances over ten years. He retired from professional football in 2014 and went to play part-time for Harrogate Town and Hyde United.

After Retirement, David set up coaching academies under the Pro Player Football brand before taking the Assistant Manager role at Hyde. Following on from that, he went on the manage Hyde during the Covid period before resigning in September 2021. He currently works alongside Mike Morton as the co-founder of ‘Tactx’, an online football coaching library and tactical analysis.

Speaking on his induction, David said, “I’m happy to give back to the club where I thoroughly enjoyed my time. The people at York have always been great with me, and I look forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces along with some new ones.”

Law progressed through the youth ranks at the club, first signing with the Minstermen at 10 years old, progressing through to the York City FC Youth Training Scheme, and getting his first professional contract at 16 in 2001. Graeme broke into the first team set up in his first year at the club and was capped four times for Scotland Under 19s as a 17-year-old in the European Championships.

Graeme made over 50 appearances for the Minstermen before moving to Dundee FC in January 2006, where he was part of the team that reached the Scottish Cup semi-final. Graeme also played for Tamworth FC, winning the Conference North title in 2009. He also represented England Universities, winning the Home Nations Tournament. He was then selected to represent Great Britain in the World University Games in Shenzhen, China, in 2011, earning seven caps, with the squad winning the silver medal.

Graeme’s post-playing career has led him into researching the welfare of professional footballers, and he completed a PhD in 2018. He is now the Head of Sport at York St John University and is actively working in trying to implement player welfare programmes into professional football clubs, in partnership with Movember.

Graeme said, “Having grown up supporting and playing for York City FC from a young age, I feel honoured to be asked to take this role, represent the club in this way and being able to give something back to the club and its supporters.”

And finally, Iain said “As a York native I fulfilled a “boyhood dream” by playing for my hometown club. I grew up as a Junior Red, ball boy, season ticket holder,  I’ve had a lifelong connection and passion for York City FC.

“I played locally for Woodthorpe Greens (later managing them from under 8s through under 15s, as an 18 yr old) Dringhouses and York RI.

“I played for England under 19s when at York College , whilst also training with the City youth team from the age of 15, which led to Bobby Saxton offering me a professional contract in 1988.

“I was a professional player 3 seasons for City and had some amazing highs (scoring on my debut), playing against top opposition in the League Cup, and some horrific lows (I was the sub who came on for a few minutes shortly after David Longhurst collapsed on the pitch).

“After City I had a decent career at Chesterfield and Huddersfield Town (where I became the first ever scorer of the Golden Goal in British football). Scored at Highbury v Arsenal and also lucky enough to have played at old Wembley twice. Some great experiences.

“I now work as a match summariser for BBC Radio York’s York City commentary, regularly attending games and offering insights.

“Another perk I’m lucky enough to have is that I get to host the hospitality at the LNER for home games, directly engaging with fans and creating a positive matchday experience which is how I see Saturdays watching York City!

In summary, my history as a homegrown player,  enduring passion for York City FC, and my current public role as a commentator and host have hopefully helped with the club offering me the huge opportunity to represent the club as an ambassador. If I was told in 1988 that my journey with York City was still going strong in 2025 I would have snapped hands off! My aim is to keep involved with the club and if I can help in any way I will do just that”
