Following on from the huge success of last years Great York Family Cookery Competition, York City Foundation are delighted to be returning to the York Food & Drink Festival with this years offer: the Great York Family Smoothie Competition.
York Food & Drink Festival is also a not-for-profit organisation that operates a 10-day festival in the centre of York, aiming to promote local food producers, independent restaurants and retailers. The Festival run from 19th to 28th September, and also offers countless free workshop places for primary School children and Youth Groups, and for the public to take part in.
The collaboration between the Foundation and the Festival, aims to bring a family element, whilst focusing on cultivating the next generation of budding chefs with a focus on creating healthy nutrition, this year in the form of smoothies with consideration being made as to how these support the body in preparation for physical activity or how they help the body recover. .
The competition is open for young people aged 8-14 years, and an accompanying parent/adult carer.
The finalists will be invited to make their smoothies, and bring them to the Food and Drink Festival’s event space: St Crux Parish Hall, Pavement, York YO1 9UP on Saturday 20th September from 4-6pm, where they will be able to present them in their family pair ie Parent/Carer and Child. Finalists will be asked to present their Smoothies ready for the judges to taste test them.
Paula Stainton, Foundation Manager and one of last years judges said,” I was blown away by the standard of meals prepared as part of last years competition, and how knowledgeable all the young chefs were about what they were making.
One of the Foundation’s focuses for this coming season with our young performance pathway players will be about hydration and nutrition. Our aim is for them to understand how important it is to recognise how drinks and foods can help or hinder their energy and development, and impact performance, and to address how easy it can be to prepare their own nutritious snacks or drinks, rather than relying on highly processed and often costly offers.
We hope that the competition entrants enjoy their research too, so they can explain to us how even simple ingredients in their smoothies can benefit them pre or post activity.”
A variety of match tickets are up for grabs for the winners and finalists including for York City Ladies v Leeds (at York Sport Stadium) on Sunday 28th September and for York City FC v Wealdstone – Saturday 18th October (at LNER York Community Stadium.
Entries close at midnight on Saturday 13th September, and the finalists will be selected and notified by end of Monday 15th September.
