U19s Match Report: York City U19s 3-1 Blyth Spartans U19s

York City U19s secured a second win on the bounce, beating Blyth Spartans 3-1 at home in midweek.

Tim Ryan named an unchanged starting eleven following victory over Altrincham a week earlier, while Ben Farrar and Eddie Kettlewell dropped out of the squad as they were in action for loan club Bridlington Town later that day.

Blyth had an early opportunity inside the opening two minutes, curling a free-kick just over the bar. It proved to be a relatively quiet start, with the visitors enjoying more possession but creating little.

The Spartans eventually took the lead in the 27th minute with a slight stroke of luck.

A ball into the middle was mishit by a forward, looping awkwardly up and over Cam White and into the net.

City responded well and were back on level terms just three minutes later. Sutton Greening’s first-time pass through the defence found Tom Hewson, who calmly slotted into the bottom corner.

The turnaround was completed four minutes before the break, with Hewson grabbing his second of the afternoon. Receiving a pass from Ethan Stiver, the forward turned and drove towards the edge of the area before unleashing a superb strike into the net.

Tweed had two half-chances in stoppage time, first flashing the ball across the face of goal before sending another effort high and wide.

Less than four minutes after the restart, City added a buffer goal.

Hewson was denied his hat-trick by the woodwork, but Greening was perfectly placed to convert the rebound.

York continued to press, with Belleh seeing a curling effort drift wide, while Greening forced a save, and Russell’s header was held.

Hewson was presented with another chance to complete his hat-trick, but after breaking through on goal, he fired narrowly wide of the far post.

Blyth caused a few rare problems in the final twenty minutes, but a combination of blocks and wayward efforts ensured White remained largely untroubled.

Defender Michael Kydd tried his luck from distance in the 85th minute, but his effort struck the side netting.

Substitute Oz Shaw also went close late on, heading wide before firing a first-time effort over the bar.

Ultimately, the three points remained with the Minstermen, who will look to make it three wins in a row when they travel to Altrincham on Wednesday 15th April.
