York City Ladies Development Team | League match preview | 23/04/26

York City Ladies take on Leeds Modernians tonight away from home in a league match up. The game comes only one week after facing Leeds Modernians in the League Cup quarter-final.

Reflecting on last week’s performance, York made a perfect start and took the lead inside three minutes. A corner into the box caused problems and Sasha Dann reacted quickest to turn the ball home. The early pressure continued and it was 2-0 soon after, with Meyra Mehmed closing down the goalkeeper and finding the net.

The hosts continued to threaten, with Liv Bell going close after a good run, but the game shifted midway through the half when Dann was forced off through injury and replaced by Graci Wood. Modernians grew into the game and pulled a goal back in the 26th minute. York dealt with a late spell of pressure, including a dangerous free kick, but just before half time Modernians were reduced to ten players following a red card. Despite that setback, they found an equaliser shortly after to make it 2-2 at the break.

York had to deal with pressure early in the second half, with Eliza Newton making an important block and Lyla Cooper producing a number of saves to keep things level.

York regained the lead just before the hour mark. Mehmed set up Dann, who had returned to the field, worked space well and finished to make it 3-2. The game remained open though and Modernians found another equaliser on 75 minutes before adding a fourth soon after to take the lead.

Modernians were reduced to nine players late on, giving York the chance to push forward. A late corner provided one final opportunity, but the equaliser did not come.

Full time score, 3-4. A competitive performance from York, but they exit the League Cup at the quarter-final stage.

The team will look to the remainder of the league fixtures as well as the final of the North Riding County Cup taking place at Northallerton in two weeks time.

Good luck to Manager Sam and the team tonight!
