York City Ladies FC | Weekly Roundup | 06/10/25

  • 8 October 2025

York City Ladies first team hosted West Didsbury and Chorlton in the third qualifying round of the FA Cup.

From early on the MinsterBelles controlled possession and pushed to go a goal ahead, with great link up play from Doddy and Bentley. The first real threatening chance of the game came twelve minutes in, with an effort from Shaw going just wide, before Astle came close two minutes later. In the nineteenth minute the ladies efforts were finally rewarded with a goal from Astle, placed comfortably past the keeper. The momentum continued where in twenty-third minute Astle doubled the lead, with a well worked corner by Bell. Unfortunately the visitors were able to add one back of their own, just a minute later, but York kept pushing with an effort from Doddy going over the bar.
The first half continued much the same, forcing the opposition goalkeeper into some great saves, denying Bentley. Rewarded with another corner, the Belles efforts paid off, when Astle added a third… a first half hat-trick, and a second assist from the corner for Bell. The MinsterBelles were on top and building momentum to take into the second half, with the first half ending 3-1.
York came out a real threat, deserving multiple goals after some great build up play, and were finally able to add another in the fifty-sixth minute, an assist for Astle, slotted calmly into the net by Bentley. Keeping a solid defensive structure, York were able to clear all possible danger and get the ball back into the final third. Just eight minutes later, York added a fifth, with Ash, Astle and Bentely linking up, with Bentley adding another calm goal. Sidwell was then able to keep the scoreline at 5-2 when she denied Westdidsbury in a great one versus one chance, minute seventy-two. And a further ten minutes later a great through ball by Martin was played to Bentley, who was one versus one at the other end but sadly could not capitalise on the chance with the scoreline remaining at five. York secured a final corner with a strong header from Varley being cleared off the goal-line!
The ladies kept pushing until the end and maintained the attacking threat throughout, finishing 5-1 and qualifying for the first proper round of the Adobe FA cup! We look to build on an emphatic win in league action at home next Sunday against Wythenshawe.

York City Ladies Reserve team ended up without a game as the opposition pulled out, but they will continue on their positive start to the season in two weeks time, against Notts County Reserves away from home.

York City Ladies Development Team looked to bounce back from a previous defeat, travelling to play Farsley FC Women in their second league game. After a positive start, the scoreline was quickly one goal each, with Farsley taking the lead in the twenty-fourth minute before an immediate equaliser by York’s Daisy Masefield. The opposition added another to go ahead 2-1 in the thirty-fifth minute, but the team kept fighting. Going into half time one goal down, the ladies were keen to get back on top.

In the second half, the ladies efforts paid off, with an equaliser by Ruby Shannon in the sixty-fifth minute. Unfortunately, the lead didn’t last long, with the opposition adding another in the eighty-second minute. Again, the ladies were determined to keep pushing and were rewarded with another just five minutes later, as Masefield added her second. The ladies luck sadly could not turn, having hit the cross bar twice and the post three times in total, it was not meant to be.
The game ended with the opposition adding two late goals in the ninetieth minute after a quick counter-attack, finishing it off in the ninety-third to end 5-3. Manager Joe added: “We had numerous chances in both halves, having had three cleared off the line, missing an open goal and bouncing off the woodwork multiple times. We were able to correct our mistakes last week, doing all the basics right, but we did not have luck on our side today. A frustrating day for the ladies.”

York City is proud of our rich history and giant killing success for over a century. We are York!
