York City win U16 Junior Boys’ County Cup Final

York City U16s were victorious on Wednesday night, as they beat Evolution Football Academy 2-0 at Wigginton Road to clinch the U16 Junior Boys’ County Cup.

City had never previously won the cup, making this their inaugural County Cup success.

On home turf at York City Training Ground, the young Minstermen got off to a flyer, with Tom Hewson putting us ahead after just seven minutes.

After an initial shot was half-cleared off the line, Hewson darted in to prevent the defender from hoofing away, and managed to snatch the ball and poke home with the second bite of the cherry at the near post.

Evolution had a chance to level the score a quarter of an hour in, the referee awarding a penalty for a foul within the area.

The number seven stepped up, scuffing his spot-kick low and down the middle, which the City stopper got down well to keep out, to the delight of his teammates and those watching on from the sidelines.

The visitors would go on to regret that, as York doubled the advantage approaching half time – a poor clearance allowed Hewson to burst through, latch onto a flick-on, and fire under the diving ‘keeper from inside the box.

City would continue to defend their lead and see out an impressive 2-0 winning performance to seal the County Cup.

Congratulations to everyone associated with the cup win, a massive achievement for the club.

Keep an eye out at half-time at our next home game, against Aldershot Town, on Saturday 12th April (3pm kick-off), when the U16s will parade their trophy around the pitch – make sure to give them a massive round of applause!
