York City are delighted to announce the permanent signing of defender Zak Johnson for an undisclosed fee from Premier League side Sunderland.
The 21-year-old returns to the LNER Community Stadium following a hugely successful loan spell last season, during which he played a key role in helping the Minstermen to a memorable promotion back to the EFL.
The centre-back initially joined City on a short-term loan in November 2025, and quickly established himself as a key figure in the backline of Stuart Maynard’s side.
His deal was extended until the end of the season, and he went on to play 23 times, scoring once and assisting twice in our title challenge.
Johnson began his footballing journey in Sunderland’s academy, progressing through the ranks before earning opportunities with the U21s.
Despite not making any league appearances for the Black Cats, he was given cup experience, and sent out on loan to the likes of Hartlepool United, Dundalk, and Notts County, where he racked up valuable minutes.
Having worked under Stuart Maynard at Notts County, the City boss opted to bring him back and now brings him to North Yorkshire on a permanent deal.
Welcome back to the Minstermen, Zak!
Subject to EFL and FA approval.
