Match Report | York City 2-2 Barnsley FC

City and Barnsley played out an entertaining score draw at the LNER this evening!

Barnsley had the first chance of the game when a ball forward to Reyes Cleary left him with room to shoot from inside the box, but Harrison Male put in the block to make a great save.

Out of nowhere, the Minstermen had the lead. A clearance from the Barnsley box fell to Ollie Banks, who curled in a shot right into the top corner from outside the box.

City nearly had another just minutes later when Banks again switched the ball right towards Joe Felix, who teased the ball to Ollie Pearce on the edge of the six-yard box, but he could only place his header over the bar.

It was an entertaining start to this contest as the Reds nearly drew level shortly after. Cleary again from inside the box, but Male was again equal to the effort.

Alex Hunt couldn’t recreate the goal he scored last week as he fired a free-kick wide of the post.

Male was again called into action in the 19th minute. Caylan Vickers, with a low-driven shot from outside the box, was parried wide by the shot-stopper.

The goalkeepers were certainly enjoying a busy start. Murphy Cooper pulled off a fantastic fingertip save to deny Tyrese Sinclair with a looping shot from outside the box.

Vimal Yoganathan had the final chance of the half, but his header from inside the box sailed over the crossbar.

Barnsley drew level not long into the second half. Vickers latching onto the end of a through ball before placing a shot into the bottom corner.

Nathan Ogbeta nearly had the Reds in front. His low driven shot from inside the post struck the post before being cleared away.

Despite the second half chances, it was York who re-took the lead in the 70th minute. Mo Fadera’s inch-perfect cross met Ollie Pearce in the six-yard box, who fired the ball home.

Barnsley however found their grove once more, another ball forward was collected by Adam Philips who rounded the ball past Male and into the net.

Sinclair was looking to try the audacious from range once more. His shot from a free-kick struck the left-hand post.

There was to be no late drama as the game finished level.
