York City U18s ran out 2-1 winners in their second pre-season test, away at Goole AFC on Tuesday evening.
City started brightly, going close in the opening minute through Tom Hewson, who forced a block from the goalkeeper before Josh Binns fired the rebound over.
Goole had a small window of opportunity and a chance to apply pressure, but couldn’t force anything more than a low shot which was simply claimed by Campbell White.
Hewson was played in down the right, and won City a corner in the eighth minute as the ‘keeper had to turn the effort around the post.
After Sutton Greening took it short, the ball eventually found its way to the back post, where it was scrambled home by Hewson; however, the flag was up.
Even more chances fell the way of the striker in the first quarter – bursting through again, he almost rounded the ‘keeper but failed to take the ball any further, after he had seen another close-range strike saved moments earlier.
Against the run of play, Goole found the opener, a red shirt acrobatically firing the ball into the net from a corner in the 15th minute.
Five minutes later, the Minstermen were level, through none other than Hewson. A wonderful cross from the left from Binns picked out the number nine at the back post, who connected well with it to strike home the leveller.
It was only a couple of minutes after when Binns grabbed a goal to go nicely with his assist. Oscar Woolford used his rapid pace to beat his man and roll the ball into the danger area for the opposite winger to smash past the shot-stopper and turn the game around.
Later on, Hewson fired the ball over the top on the turn, and shot wide towards the end of the half, after Woolford’s initial attempt had been denied.
In the second half, York were more than happy to keep hold of the ball, which they did in large parts.
White had very little to do during the half despite multiple home chances being squandered, with the biggest chance perhaps coming in the final stages, when a Vikings header floated narrowly over.
